Research for task one

Michael ray

Most people consider him an advertising food photographer with a studio located in Pirrsburgh which has been called a food photographers paradise.  His photographs have appeared in many national publications for food advertising and editorial content. What makes Michael's work stand out is the way he lights the food he uses, he lights the food in such way all the detail and texture is shown in his images, this help make the food more appealing and attractive for advertising. He has worked for many national and regional clients, with some in restaurants, magazines and food manufacturing.

My opinion on their work

He places his objects in a natural setting, such as on a table with the food on a plate.  This allows me connect to the images as I commonly see food on plates. His usage of light inspires me as he is able to capture such detail in his photographs. All the objects and food he uses have very vibrant colours this makes the images more unique and interesting to look at, this also increase the appeal of the photograph.  As he mainly photographs sweet treats this makes me more enticed and interested in the photograph. I like the way he mainly uses three objects in his work, as it limits the distraction that appears in the images he creates.

Aaron graubart

In most of his photographs I can see he likes to match colours and sometimes not photograph the whole of the food object. He has won many awards for his work and he studied the subject fine art at the Sir John cass school of art and he studied photography in London, in the university of art. His passion for history and language of painting heavily influences his work, however to keep his work in the present and modern he uses his love of contemporary and graphical in his photographs. His work has been used in ad campaigns and magazines, he also uses his camera to capture events that happening around him and things he sees that interest him.

My opinion on their work

He photographs his food items in a dramatic, creative and interesting and so that the item is the main focus and appeals to me and people looking at the image. All the colours he uses are bright and even though there are colours that are common, used this setting and as there from the food it contributes creatively to the image. He seems to use simple and one colour backgrounds which helps the items stand out and and become the only item viewers look at. He has taken photos of a range of food types, food with sweet and savoury food, he as also photographed drinks , shown below, for this image he does not include the entire glass. This gives a creative twist as it makes me only focus on the liquid.

Annette Slade
She has 18 years of experience and has been a commercial and editorial photographer, with her images been known for being warm, inviting, comforting and of a high quality. Her images showcase her passion and her eye for catching and creating unique photographs. Aiming to give her clients what they ask for and more she believes no detail is too small and works on every aspect of her images. Annette specialises in food, floral, still life and editorial, which allows her to either work in a studio or on a location.

My opinion on their work

Her work is more in a location setting which makes the images more relative, this is the setting I may be using for my photographs. The natural light she is using helps enhance and highlight every detail, which make the images rich in quality and interesting. Photographs she has taken of drinks are my favourite of her work as her images capture the detail of the everything in the image, this make it a fantastic image which I find appealing. Vibrant colours are commonly used in her wok and enhances her images as it makes the items she use stand out, the vibrant colours also makes the food in her images more appealing.

Gray box studios

The team consists of two guys, Paul Gomez and Jon Hsu, both trained from Brooks Institute of photography. They are now located in metro area in Denver and as it’s a central location it offers easy travel to locations such as coasts. Gray box studios mainly focus on architecture, food and product photography, each image is creatively lit, technically excellent and exceeding requirements. Both are very good friends and when not photographing can be found playing ping pong in the studio.

My opinion on their work

There photographs can vary in different areas each time, this is what makes them unique, they either use a studio setting, a person carrying food or a normal dinner/ plate setting. There use of natural light makes the food items more appealing to look at and this makes the image an successful photo image to advertise the food. Some of their images are in black and white and this for me creates a unique mood and setting, however I prefer the photographs with colour as there eye catching and appealing to me.
