First photo shoot for glass task

All the images below were taken digital and have been edited. When I was editing I enhanced the colours on each image to improve the quality and attract attention. The majority of my images include the colour blue as the glass has reflected the sky.  Below is an image where I've applied a filter to create the outcome to show me which photo is better and if the filter works. The image without a prominent glass/reflective surface however it does as there is many windows in the photo, the buildings are also a tiny bit parallel.  When I was on location I found visually creative locations that have an aspect of glass so that I can create effective images that are for the project. Finding these locations in Bradford was hard before however after photographing Bradford for nearly two years I know the best locations where to take photographs. Every photo below was shot on a manual setting and I adjusted anything I want to achieve the best photo.

Research for task three

Jay maisel
Jay began his career in photography in 1954 after studying graphic design and painting , he has gone on to photograph people such as Marilyn Monroe. Most people know him for capturing colour, light and gesture in everyday life. He has won many awards from various organisations. He has continued to work on his personal work while also selling his work and teaching lectures to many people.

After looking at his work I came to realize that he focus on a a simple scene and he captures the setting in a visually appealing scene and focuses on the important details. He includes colours that are prominent in his images and adds eye catching detail which attracts the viewers attention. From what I've read he uses film to keep that type of photography alive and use it to create amazing photographs that can showcase scenes the best way om film.

Jerry Uelsmann
He was born in Detroit on June 11 in 1934, after receiving his degree he began to teach photography in the university of Florida. As he is a fellow of the royal photographic society and also a founding member of the society of photographic teaching which allowed him to showcase his work in many exhibitions in England and other aboard locations. Many of his work is also included in permanent collections shown in the museums.

In his work I like the way he uses shadows and features of the background to his advantage to improve the image. The way he produces and sets up his images is very creative and unique which makes is images stand out. The way he composes his photographs is interesting and offers an different perspective. I like the way he uses a normal setting and then adds something to change the entire image looks which makes his work stand out. Even though his images are in black and white there is eye catching detail which attracts the attention from viewers.

Andy Glass

He is most known for his work in the advertising world and he has created the most recognizable, memorable ads where some have even became a part of pop culture.  He knows how to blend the art of photography and technology perfectly which allows his work to be successful and popular.  In every one of his photographs he includes a interesting and creative colour pallete to improve his images and achieve the desired outcome. Having experience with shooting landscapes has allowed him to take something simple and turn it into a piece of art, he is able to capture the simple lines that are placed in the landscapes that exists. Being one of Nikon's specially featured photographs and also regularly has worked showcased in the press, is just a few of his accomplishments.

When I picked images of his I liked all include glass and vibrant colours as they are shot simply and effectively.  I can see how these images work as advertising promotions. These images are very simple which adds to the effectiveness. He takes something simple and makes it unique and appealing.  When he is photographing he makes sure to highlight a vibrant colour and make it  focus point of the image.  When looking at his images I was intrigued by the way he uses the light in his photos as they highlight the subject and makes the images interesting.

Erik Johansson
He is based in Sweden at the moment however he works with clients worldwide. When he is working he is not capturing moments he is capturing ideas. The way he creates his photographs is by using Photoshop and editing the images to get the outcome he wants.

The way he uses country landscapes to create his images is interesting and creative.  I like the way he incorporates modern items which add to the creativeness  My personal favorite is the one of the women painting the floor as its very simple and effective, I also like how the blue is so vibrant that viewers attention is directed towards the floor.  I like how he uses a simple landscape shot and then adds an object that changes how the viewer looks at the image.

Mood board

I have selected these images as this is something I want to sort of recreate these ideas in my own way and create images with a similar style. I want either colour or the reflection to be the main subject of the image and what the viewer focus on. When I try to recreate these ideas I will do it in my own way and put my own take on the images, Out of all the images /ideas shown above I like the mirror covering a part of the body as it creates an illusion and could help me achieve an artistic and creative photos.  Another illusion is created with the image of the chess piece as I have a few ideas on how I could create this in my own way using other props to create a different look. There are something dangerous about smashing glass to take photographs however I will use the best measures to make sure I'm safe and can get the best shot. All of my ideas can be created with props and reflective surfaces to create these images.

Final images chosen for LP task

Live at Leeds -
When starting with this cover the original cover is simplest cover I chose and with this it allowed me to produce an unique and interesting photo  I picked the indoor location barburrito that is in Leeds, this was because the title is to do with Leeds and this was an interesting location to photograph. I used natural lighting and I included a mirror in the image which reflected the light around the picture. My idea for my final outcome was to create an image that stood to the viewers My final image became what I wanted and achieved the look I wanted to capture. Using text to overlay on the image can show people what album I'm interpretation and the text adds another creative aspect to the image. This was taken in landscape format and was also taken at a low angle to allow for the mirror be the central focus. What I like about this image is that the green stands out and diverts the attention of the viewer.

Take a photograph -
This is very similar concept to live at Leeds as the title allows me to play around with the ideas I have.  I chose an image that stood out to me as artistic and unusual , this is why I picked the image that included neon lights as this aspect makes the image stand out. I added text on this image to enhance the effectiveness of the photograph , the only problem I have with this photo is that the text isn't as prominent as much as I would like it to be. Photographing this way allows people to imagine what the light text says and cropping like this allows the most interesting section the main focus for viewers. When on location I was scoping unique locations and this is how I achieved this photo. The original cover is taken from outside looking in which is why I wanted to do the opposite and shot inside.

Striped lines -
To represent my ideas for this cover I chose this image because of the lines that are in the background  however there is another image, the pop art image, this is because lines are used to create this image. For this photo I shot in landscape and and used photo-shop I added the paint onto the image to make it unique and interesting.  I only want certain colours to be shown so that they pop out of the picture. This is more of creative version of the original cover. For my final choices one of the reasons I chose this image is because the lines are very dynamic and the key to the image working, I added a filter to this image to make it have the vibe of the 80's which is something I achieved with this image. The filter also makes the modal look interesting and eye catching. I came across this location by walking around Leeds and thought it would be perfect to use for this cover.

A hard days night-
My original idea was to use many images and place them together on one page and recreate the cover in my own way however after trying this idea I figured out that it didn't work as it meant that each image couldn't be placed on the same page without reducing the attention of each image. So instead I decided to create one image with the same theme and impact, my final outcome was successful in this as its is creative and impacts the theme, there is also other improvements this change made, with this I was able to use an effect created with light and where the subject was , this allowed me to capture this image. This was taken from outside looking in the modal in the photo could barley hear me so he chose what face expression and where his head was. If I were to re-shoot I would try different angles and maybe give the modal more direction so that I could get more poses to create a range of images.

Band on the run-
I didn't go with my original idea as I thought a picture of a person's feet would represent what people use to run on. To achieve this photo I had to ask a person I didn't know if I could take their picture , they allowed me and I took this image. When editing I adjust the contrast and brightness to enhance the colour and make the image successful represent the decade. I wanted to go a bit more off broad when photographing this persons shoes, I picked them because there bright colour and interesting pattern attracted my attention. This is something I want to achieve with my photos. I did not allow myself enough time to try my original idea but I do like what I created with this image.

1-Dark side of the moon -
Here again I didn't go with my original plan but this made me create a more amazing image as I used a model to pose in between a door creating this illusion. I used the typography to my advantage to make the image look better and creating a theme that is connecting to the decade the original cover is from. For my image I didn't want much colour Placing the head in the centre makes it the main focus and what people's attention diverts to. I like this image as it has dramatic look to it and the subject in the photo is what makes the image what it is.As I tend to use Photoshop on the majority of my work and for this image I adjusted the contrast , changed the levels and applied other effects, this is something I do to improve my work. I spent a good amount of time with the model to take many photographs so that I could pick my favourites. For every one of my images I set my camera to the manual setting to achieve the best shots.

make it big

I purposely put the text to a small size to help emphasis the title of the cover and what I'm trying to say with the photograph. When out in Leeds I saw an attraction that struck me as big so I thought it would be perfect for the make it big album by Wham. Another image I used for my concept was a photograph of a figure from Fallout 4 where his thumb and head are big in size and make an impact on the image making viewers attention gravitate towards him. In the game it has a 80's vibe to it which is another reason I took this photo. I made the background black and white to make the colours of the figure stand out to make the image even more impactive with the concept.

Between the buttons -
When photographing this image I wanted to create a oasis type of look and feel which is because when the rolling stones produced covers that included the band and this is something oasis has done with their covers. I followed my original however I did change what I used to frame the subject, I instead used plants and the sides of a couch. When editing this image I didn't want any colour to be more prominent then any other as I want the viewers to focus on the subject and not just one thing. To achieve this image I was photographing from an high angle using the format landscape and have a manual setting on my camera. The room I was in was well lit with artificial light produced by the light bulbs above me and the modal which allowed for the subject not to be surrounded or overwhelmed by shadows or darkness. The typography I've added improves the image as it adds an interesting focal point in the top of the image for viewers to look at and gain knowledge from. I dint plan for the match between the clothes on the modal to the couch as it was by accident which helped my image become more successful.

Leeds photo shoot

Below are my edits I've created using photos from my Leeds photo shoot. I used photo shop to its full capability to achieve these photos, all these photos were shot on location in Leeds. I took the opportunity to go out on my own and photography my surroundings and people I saw, this allowed me to build up my confidence to where I asked people if I could take their photo. When photographing I made sure to everything was where I wanted it and made the subject be the focus of the image. I experimented with the formats I photographed in to achieve the best outcomes. When on location I had the albums I chose on my phone so that look at them and choose things that I think represent what decade the albums are from. This photo shoot was very fun and it was interesting to look at Leeds as a canvas where through my photos I could tell the story I wanted to. Music has influenced my entire life, I grew up listing to amazing artists such as the Beatles and The who, my love for music influenced my work which is why in Leeds is where I found most of the images I'm using for my final as many people have played here and there's no shortage of music in Leeds. I had a modal with me for the entire day , which is why he is in more then one image, when I was photographing I asked people if I could take their picture which is something I have not done before so this photo shoot has built my confidence which has improved myself as a photographer.  When interesting things caught my attention I would photograph them but I made sure to take photos of things that would be able to be made into a cover, which was very important for me. Photographing objects with vibrant colours helped make the images attractive, creative and able to represent the decades the albums are from.

Landscape

All the above images are to do with the landscape task and were taken in rural/ city / country side / residential.  I took these images during the day to show of the colour and beauty of the landscapes in my images. My favourite is of the men play croquet as it’s a well executed shot with a quirky subject.  I was very lucky to have sunny days to photograph on so that the subjects are highlighted so that I could capture the detail of each aspect of my images. What I found out that most of my landscape images include the colour green in at least one part of the image, which is especially shown in the countryside images, as the ground is covered in luscious grass which is a bright green.  When photographing the city the surroundings make my images have the opposite effect as the world in my photo is covered in concrete and people which can add interesting focal points thought the images.   Even though I like looking at landscapes that are created in the country side I don’t completely like photographing in these settings, this is because at times it can be cold, muddy and tiring, and however I do my best and stay so that I can achieve a perfect image. Every photo was taken with a manual setting so that while photographing I can have complete control. The reason I didn’t pick any of my landscape images for the covers is that to me none of them fit what I was trying to say with any of the covers,  plus I wanted an human interest in most of my final images which is why none of these image were chosen.

First photo shoot during LP project

Pic one and two : This was taken just as the sun was setting and originally I wanted the modals head to be in front of the light but seizing the opportunity I took the photo. I like how the light has created a line going across the image and has created an interesting effect. Cropping the image shows me what the final image would look like which is helpful and gives me a better chance of picking the better image. Creating two versions of this image showed me which is better, the one below is in black and white because I wanted to add a creative aspect to my images. This was shot in manual setting with an average shutter speed to let in the right amount of light to create a effective image, even though I love how the sky looks on the above image I wanted to experiment and see how the image would look like in black and white. The effects are not exactly what I thought they would be but I like the way the image looks. The blue filter was not added in Photoshop and I didn't take the photo in any way to create this however it makes the image more effective and connects the viewer to the central focus to the sky, this creates a link in the image which the viewers follow. If I were to re shot I would take a few other shots where the modal is in different locations and try different formats and places I take the photo from , I could try being either above or below the subject.

photo 3: I wanted people to create a story around this image this is why I photographed the modal in this way , to look mysterious and unknown to viewers. I used the lighting provided by the lamps hanging in the room behind the subject , I placed the subject here so that I could have the face in the shadows but I wanted the outline of the person to be prominent. I wanted there to be no object with a color that would divert the attention of the viewer, as I want the focus to be on the person , having an object with a vibrant color would fit into the theme I'm trying to create with this image. The contrast of the black and white adds to the effectiveness. This photo was sort of a quick grab , however I did place the person in this position to take this shot and create this effect.

pic four, five, six: I applied many different filters to this image to create different outcomes and effects.  In this image I wanted the subject to be the main focus for these images as well as my other images. Again I wanted a mystery theme by surrounding and engrossing the subject in darkness and not show the features of the face. The effect on the photo above is to bring attention to the ceiling and what lines the light creates. i dint want the shadows to overwhelm the subject
