Research for LP project

1960

David redfern 1960

David started his career photographing jazz festivals and also visiting jazz clubs where he photographed famous jazz musicians. He then when on to photograph other famous musicians such as the Beatles during their magical mystery tour film.  Frank Sinatra requested that David became his tour photographer, after this he set up his own agency to represent his own work. When he was working in the jazz world Buddy rich said  “He’s the Cartier Bresson of jazz.”

My thoughts- Even though some of his work is a simple shot of the performer on stage there are some images that are unconventional and innovative , with many with bright and attractive colours being used. Most of the work in using jazz musicians uses light to highlight the person in a way they are prominent in the image and become the main focus.

1970
Clive arrowsmith
He is situated in London and works where he lives. His photography started after he left art school and became a graphic designer for TV.  Leaving television allowed him to become a photographer and he is the only photographer to have captured the Pirelli calendar two years in succession. He mainly work in the advertising and editorial side of photography but then was equally known for his work for the music genre of photography and still life work.  Working with many big names in music such as : Paul McCartney, Mick jagger and Def leppard.

My thoughts- This is an image of a guy I look up to so this is why I picked this image. Plus the guy in the photo ( Paul Mccartney) is holding a guitar which He is popular for his skills with this instrument. This produces a connection for fans of Paul to his bands he's performed in, and the music he has created. Much of Clives work has vibrant and powerful colours however most of his images of famous music people are in black and white, which I believe is to let the people be the focus and let their personality show through the image. When he is photographing models he picks outfits that are creative and eye catching and include bright and outstanding colours. This is to make the image effective.

1980
 Charles Peterson
Charles is most known for his work with the record company sub pop , He also known for depicting the rise of the northwest music scene in the 80’s and for using uncropped , full frame image.  He has also taken my images of Kurt cobain with was used for the film about Kurt's life.

My thoughts- From what I can see he mainly works in black and white and has no color that is included however to me this doesn't make the image less successful or attractive to the viewer. Most of his photographs are taken on the stage where the subject looks unaware of the photographer. This showcases the environment of concert in the 80’s and how the performers and the audience interacted with each other. He worked a lot with Kurt and documented his life and used objects to photograph his life.

Mick rock

When researching mick rock I found out he had an interesting life and took many opportunities to capture great photographs of famous musicians throughout the decades. To many people he was known as ‘Man who shot the seventies’ this was because of his iconic images of performers of that time. He has continued to work in the field of photography by still producing iconic and inspiring images. he has shot for films such as the rocky horror show and Hedwig. He has also published many books which include his work and is working on a documentary showcasing his work and career. His most favorite person to photograph is David Bowie as they are both friends and David is fantastic and easy to work with. He photographed rock and roll because of his last name and he believed he had to work a something that he could incorporate rock and roll with. Creating many beautiful images that have been used for many albums for major artists.

Above are examples of his work with include two famous ionic artist that many people recognize. The one that is created in color  has many elements that show this as the subject has clothing with vibrant colours and this makes the image eye catching. Most of his work is simple and only uses a couple of colours to attract the attention of the viewer.
