Different Genres

documentary photography

The main objective of documentary is to capture the objects or scene in the photograph. This type of photography is well known to be used to document peoples lives. It is also mainly known to document events especially something that impacts many people. This is most likely now a historic effect. I believe the best use of documentary photography is capturing  the general look of the person or location in the photograph. This type of photography can make a great impact and can shed light on difficult situations.  After the late 1990's an interest in documentary photography grew. Since the decline of print media photographers in this field have had to use other ways in showcasing there work , some use expeditions and gallery's to gain an audience.

Nature photography

Photographers in this field use beautiful locations or any general location to capture their images. Most people focus on the country side as this contains many photogenic elements.  Many consider that nature and wildlife overlap wit each other which is something I also believe.  The use of color is sometimes outstanding and picked out of the locations in a lot of peoples work. Some people have a concern with the growing popularity of nature photography as some people think its increasing the amount of damage to the environment.  The work that is the result of nature photography is mainly used for either postcards or chocolate boxes or something similar.

Animal/Personal photography

This is a new type of photography and it also is very similar to the concept of the selfie as these both are commonly used by non professional photographers and for social media sites. Personal photography is used so common its become a common  occurrence in nearly everyone's everyday life.  Most people don't see this as a type of photography and see it as a superficial thing however I see it as a social art form which is very accessible. Animal photography stems sort of from the selfie however people do experiment with animal photography for their professional work.

Final piece

This is how I will present my work by mounting 5 by 7 images on pieces of card. When placing the images on the card I make sure to have enough space around the images. This is so that the images aren't squashed together.  Nearly all my images have a wide range of colour which is something I wanted to showcase using this method to present. As blue is common through nearly all the photographs I picked this will make me pick a card with neutral colour which helps the images stand out.  The best choice I believe to be is grey as shown above this colour works really well.  Mixing images that are placed in landscape and portrait adds interesting points across the card. Printing all the images 5 by 7 means that all the images are equal in size and all them get the same amount of attention. Using the same layout of two of the to create a constituency between the images so that the audience makes a connection. Picking this images was key as they all contain at least one or two of the elements of industrial and country/nature.

Research

Mark Hamblin
Mark is a regular contributor to British leading wildlife and photographic magazines , he has released many books which mainly included wildlife photos. He has traveled to many parts of the world, when he was younger he developed a interest in bird watching and photography, these interests influenced his work.

I like his work because of the way he uses elements in the landscape to frame the location. You can also see how he uses mutual colours which can be easily found in the places he photographs. He mainly uses yellows and oranges as the two most shown on the images, these are two of the many colours people associate with these type of landscapes. The techniques he uses , such as using the landscape format and the use of rule of thirds, these are want I want to apply to my images. His history in photography is the main key into why his images are photogenic.

John shaw
He started photography from the 1970's at a very young age and by the 1997 he received his first outstanding photographer award, Publishing many photographic books with his images he has taken on every continent. In 2002 Nikon picked John as one of their legends behind the lens.

As from what I can see John doesn't rely that much on colour he composes the images ,this is the key element in his images.  After all his work it's obvious he uses a Nikon as the quality is well shown thought his work.   Another user of the rule of thirds this technique is best used in nature and when living creatures are included. Instead of colours like oranges he mainly uses greens which is more commonly found in nature. The way he frames the images is very creative and to me makes the images more appealing.

Ross Hoddinott
Ross developed a passion and fascination for the natural world. He is among the UK top leading photographers and when he was younger he won the BBC country file junior photographer of the year. He has contributed to many national magazines.

Ross used the techniques and elements previously used by other photographers, he also uses a range of colours to make his photos interesting.

Film

These are all the images taken with my film camera at the location of Bradford and Leeds with a mixture of buildings and nature as the main subjects. When I saw my the images I saw the colour most used was blue and this colour is mainly seen in the pictures of the cities. I varied the settings when photographing to achieve the best images. I was very lucky as the most days I was photographing the weather was lovely and this determined how I exposed the images. I mainly stuck with the format of landscape to frame the objects in the best way this I find is the case with most buildings. All these photos are from colour film as I thought this was best to capture the locations and all the colours that are in the environment.  I decided using landscape along side colour film was the only way I could achieve the best images of the location in my images. Even though I prefer to work with digital cameras  I like the interesting result I can create with film.

Project evaluation

I thoroughly enjoyed this project as I was able to have creative freedom and photography the subject I want to. I picked a subject I personal level as it’s something I’ve always wanted to. Comparing nature to industrial has allowed me to capture interesting photos. Throughout the project I dabbled in both film and digital as I want to see the different types of images I can create.  I personal prefer digital as I believe it’s more accessible and easy to work with. I mainly photographed in landscape format as it frames the locations in the best way as its most commonly associated with the type of photography I’m capturing. My favorite location was Kirkstall in Leeds as the Abbey there is beautiful and I used both digital and film to capture this location.  During the photographing process of the project I used a manual setting on every one of my cameras as it gives me more control of how the picture turns out. When on location mainly picked out the vibrant colours to use thought the images to make the images appealing and attract the viewer’s attention to different parts in the image.  All my photo shoots were in my personal time and with my own equipment however there is one location I visited with college which was York. This was an interesting trip that allowed me to capture a wide range of images including both industrial and nature elements. I was influenced a lot by the work of the photographers I researched as there work is colorful and imaginative. This is something I worked to applied to my images to make them appealing. My best images I believe were the ones were I included the two elements of industrial and nature as this is where the best comparisons can be seen. My main goal is to people to look at my work and compare the elements and locations that I have photographed. The objects I mainly used were buildings and plant life as these two belong to the theme/ concepts I photographed. Another idea I wanted to showcase in my work is how people interact and use the location, this was different in each location. In Bradford there were many people especially around the many shopping parts of the city, this was nearly the same as Leeds however there more variation of location and people in Leeds. Both York and Kirkstall were slightly different to Leeds and Bradford, this was because they were less people are most people were where tourists visits. For each one of my images I photographed in a documentary style as to frame and create interesting images.  My main target audience is people who visit locations, for example a visitor’s center where my images could be either on a postcard or travel books, this is mainly tourists which is either family’s and people who like to explore. I picked this audience as it gives my images access to a wide range of audience. My primary research began when I was scouting the location of Bradford as even though I know the location I was looking at the buildings, I did this to see going forward how I would photograph  and the way I will construct the elements in my images. While on location I looked also how people used the type of location. All of this influenced my photography during this project.

York trip

How I've edited the images and how they fit with my intentional outcome

Images I have edited from the trip shown below

When photographing in York I focused on the detail and features in the buildings as they are simply beautiful. I took many images of the cobble streets and the detailed buildings as I wanted to capture the essence of York, these images will allow me to showcases what I want. Most of the buildings are of original design and quality they originally were which is something I'm glad I had the chance to capture. Each building also has muted and not bright colours which highlights the beautiful detail shown. I will use the method I used here when photographing in Bradford and Kirkstall,  for my images I will either have people or things in Landscape as the focus , I will do both by capturing as much detail as possible. When editing my images I didn't want to over edit where the original image is not visible or it’s clearly over edited. I will mainly change the contrast and levels to improve the image overall. On the picture of the street view I have created a slight effect of colour pop by put the sky and ground in black and white. I have chosen to take the images in a documentary style as this style will persist with the rest of my work.

Power point

For my PowerPoint I wanted to showcase my ideas and what influenced me. For the majority of my images I included vibrant colours to make my images appealing. I suspect this will appear more when I’m taking images on nature however I will pick out elements that stand out, when I’m photographing the city landscape.  On the final slide I have included my best images which I may use for my final selection which include both nature and industrial. My ideas range from creating images of landscape settings that are rustic and engrossed in green and do the opposite with the city setting and in this setting I will include more people.  The reason I picked the images shown on the influence slide was because of colour and formats used and how the objects were framed, this is something I want to achieve with my images. These images from other photographers mainly use the colour orange as the images were taken at either dawn or sunset and as I will be photographing during the day I will use blue instead as I will frame the environment to include the sky. My photos on the last slide hopefully showcase this.
